Character development is something that we (as readers) look forward to and it was definitely something that I loved about this novel.īy the end of Sweet Venom, I was practically reading the story at a super sonic speed. They are who they are for a very long time until they start to change as the story progresses with arduous obstacles, startling discoveries, and danger lurking at every corner. Gretchen, Grace, and Greer couldn’t be any more different from each other, and yet Childs makes it so. I cannot express how developed her voice seeped through the pages. For having the story told from three different point of views, Tera Lynn Childs does a PHENOMENAL job. The story is written in three first person perspectives. As the story progresses, their attempts at monster hunting and fighting were a little haphazard and clumsy, but it made the story that much more gripping, as well as humorous. There are also Grace and Greer (the two other protagonists in the novel) who are thrust into this world that Gretchen has been living in ever since she was a little. We learn from Gretchen that she is a direct decedent from Medusa, destined to send back the mythological creatures that escaped from their world to ours.īut that is far from what the story is about. I absolutely loved the beginning where Tera puts the audience right in the middle of the action with Gretchen (one of her main protagonist) fighting some beasties. It was fun and sassy with a mythological twist of monsters freely roaming the streets of San Francisco.

The many times that I did stop and read this book…well…it kept me enthralled.

But the times that I could read it were when I couldn’t sleep (which kept my mind off of strees) and at work (when I was on break or lunch).

I’ve been reading this book over the past few weeks because 1) life has been hectic and 2) I’ve been negligent. These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they’re triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters. Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though. Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school.
